OCR: ROBOTS MARTIAN ROVERS @ ROBOTS IN FILM PL Tooth, however, weighs only three to five kilos. It was tested in 1991. Having a traveling capacity equal to LeRC that of a larger rover, Tooth is equipped with sensors that enable it to react to its environment in real time. On one hand, this means its route cannot be established from Earth, but it gives Tooth a locally intelligent behavior despite a rather low computing capacity. Tooth's behavior will be programmed, in other words, there is a direct link between its sensors and motion actuators. But the signals sent to the actuators can be modified by data from other sensors. Tooth is programmed in the AIFA language, designed for computing extremely complex (non-linear) transfer functions. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed another rover called the Ant, a miniature vehicle weighing only a few hundred grams. Each Ant has a "brain" that enables it to carry out one repetitive task. So The purpose of the Ant design is to land a mother craft on Mars containing dozens of Ants, each programmed for a different task. MARS BETAT
